Welder/Fitters

Welder / Fitter Tasks

  • Lays out, fits, and welds fabricated, cast, and forged components to assemble structural forms, such as machinery frames, tanks, pressure vessels, and furnace shells according to blueprints and knowledge of welding and metallurgy.
  • Selects equipment and plans layout, assembly, and welding, applying knowledge of geometry, physical properties of metal machining weld shrinkage, and welding techniques.
  • Lays out, positions, aligns, and fits components together.
  • Bolts, clamps, and tack-welds parts to secure in position for welding.
  • Sets up equipment and welds parts.
  • May assemble parts by bolting and riveting.
  • May repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts using cutting torch, straightening press, and hand tools.
  • Using one's own hands and arms in handling, installing, forming, positioning, and moving materials, or in manipulating things that weigh up to 50 pounds. Drives fork trucks.
  • Read and understand blueprints, shop drawings, and engineering/design drawings.

Skills

  • Inspect and evaluate the quality of welds and welded products.
  • Correctly select and setup welding equipment for the job.
  • Perform routine operator maintenance.
  • Use mathematics to solve problems and to perform simple calculations, and to perform decimal-to-fractional conversions. The ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide quickly and correctly
  • Understand written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

Safety

  • Maintain proper housekeeping and safety standards.
  • Use personal protective equipment (i.e. safety glasses, hearing protection, safety shoe protection).
  • Safe operation of all machinery, tools and equipment.
  • Obey OSHA and safety rules and regulations.

Experience

  • 5 years experience welding and fitting in an industrial fabrication environment.
  • Welder Performance Qualification (WPQ) per ASME QW-484 or similar record of experience, or demonstrated ability to weld carbon and stainless steel using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW processes. GTAW skills are considered a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to weld thin gauge carbon and stainless steels.
